Files never leave your browser.
When your resume, cover letter, and portfolio live in three separate files, or a report is scattered across a dozen scans, you need to merge PDF documents into one clean file. Pixel File’s free PDF merger lets you combine PDF files in your browser in seconds: drop in your documents, arrange them in the order you want, and download a single PDF. There is no software to install, no account to create, and your files never leave your device, so sensitive documents stay private.
Merging is one of the most common PDF tasks, and it is also one of the easiest to get wrong with the wrong tool. Some online mergers shuffle your page order, degrade quality, or slap a watermark on the result. Ours preserves your pages exactly as they were, keeps them in the order you chose, and adds no watermark, because the combining happens locally on your device with no server in the middle.
How to merge PDF files
- Upload two or more PDF files by dragging them into the tool or clicking to browse. You can add files in any order to start.
- Drag the file thumbnails to rearrange them into your preferred order. The first file becomes the start of the merged document.
- Click merge and download your combined PDF instantly. All processing happens in your browser, so nothing is uploaded.
How it works
The merger uses a PDF library that runs entirely in your browser’s JavaScript engine. When you upload your files, the tool reads each PDF’s internal page list locally and copies every page, in the order you arranged, into a brand new PDF document. Text stays selectable, links keep working, and vector graphics remain crisp, because pages are copied at the document level rather than being flattened into images.
This local approach is why the merge is lossless. Nothing is re-rendered or re-compressed during the copy, so a page that was 300 DPI in the original is still 300 DPI in the merged file. File size grows roughly in proportion to the inputs, since the tool is stacking complete pages together, not adding overhead. Password-protected PDFs may prompt you for the password, because the browser library cannot read encrypted pages without it, and it will never send your document anywhere to crack it.
Worked example: building a job application packet
Imagine you are applying for a job and the posting asks for a single PDF containing your cover letter, resume, and a five-page portfolio. You have three files: cover-letter.pdf (1 page, 120 KB), resume.pdf (2 pages, 180 KB), and portfolio.pdf (5 pages, 3.2 MB with project screenshots).
You drop all three into the merger, then drag them into order: cover letter first, resume second, portfolio last. The tool copies all 8 pages into one document, cover letter on page 1, resume on pages 2-3, portfolio on pages 4-8. The merged file downloads at roughly 3.5 MB, the sum of the inputs, with every page pixel-identical to the originals. You now have one professional application.pdf instead of three attachments the recruiter has to juggle.
Frequently asked questions
Does merging PDFs reduce their quality?
No. Pages are copied at the document level, not re-rendered, so text, images, and vector graphics keep their original quality and resolution. A merged PDF looks exactly like the source files viewed back to back. If your merged file looks blurry, the source PDF was already blurry before merging.
Can I combine a PDF with scanned image pages?
Yes, as long as the scans are already saved as PDFs. If your scans are JPG photos instead, convert them first with our JPG to PDF tool, then merge the resulting PDFs with the rest of your documents. The merger accepts any mix of text PDFs and image-based PDFs in any order.
How many PDFs can I merge at once?
There is no fixed limit on file count, only the practical limit of your device’s memory. Merging dozens of small PDFs is instant; merging many very large files with hundreds of pages each can take a few seconds while your browser assembles them. Everything still happens locally with no upload wait.
Can I merge password-protected PDFs?
You can, but you will need to enter the password so the tool can read the encrypted pages. The password is used only in your browser’s memory to unlock the file and is never sent anywhere. Files you cannot unlock cannot be merged, which is exactly how it should be for your security.
Are my documents really private?
Yes. The merger runs 100% in your browser, so your PDFs are read and combined in your device’s memory and never transmitted to any server. There is no upload step and nothing is stored on our side. You can even disconnect from the internet after the page loads and the merger will keep working.
What is the difference between merge PDF and combine PDF?
There is no difference, the two phrases mean the same thing. “Combine PDF” is just another popular way people search for the same task. Whether you call it merging or combining, this tool joins multiple PDF files into one document in the order you choose.
