Our free jpg to png converter turns JPEG photos and graphics into lossless PNG files, ready for editing, layering, and transparency workflows. Designers, developers, and document creators often receive images as JPGs when their workflow demands PNG. Pixel File makes the switch in seconds, right in your browser, with no upload and no signup.

How to use the JPG to PNG converter

  1. Drop your JPG file onto the converter above, or browse to select it from your device.
  2. The conversion runs automatically in your browser, usually in under a second.
  3. Download your new PNG file and drop it straight into your editor or design tool.

How it works

When you convert jpg to png with our tool, your browser decodes the JPEG onto an HTML canvas and re-encodes it as a PNG. PNG uses lossless compression, which means the pixels that come out are exactly the pixels that went in, with no further quality loss at this step. Everything happens on your device; no file is ever uploaded to a server, so your images stay private.

Now the honest part, and it matters: converting JPG to PNG does not restore quality that JPEG compression already removed. If the original JPG had compression artifacts or softened detail, the PNG faithfully preserves those imperfections too. Think of it as a perfect photocopy of the JPG, not a restoration. What the conversion does give you is a stable, lossless file that will not degrade further no matter how many times you open, edit, and re-save it, plus a format that supports transparency for your next editing steps.

Why convert JPG to PNG?

  • Lossless re-saves. Edit and save the PNG repeatedly without the compounding quality loss that comes from re-saving JPEGs.
  • Transparency-ready. PNG supports an alpha channel, so you can cut out backgrounds and layer the image in any editor.
  • Design tool compatibility. Many design and print workflows expect PNG, and some effects and masks only work on lossless files.
  • No quality penalty going forward. The PNG locks in your current quality level and keeps it there.

Worked example

Say a client sends you a logo as logo.jpg at 180 KB, but you need a PNG to place over a colored background in a design mockup. You drop it into the converter above and download logo.png at about 640 KB. The file is larger because PNG compression is less aggressive than JPEG, but it is now lossless, re-save safe, and ready for you to add transparency or layer it in your editor.

JPG to PNG FAQ

Does converting JPG to PNG improve the quality?

No, and any tool that claims otherwise is misleading you. JPEG compression permanently discards image data, and converting to PNG cannot bring it back. The PNG preserves the JPG’s current quality perfectly, which is valuable, but it is not an upgrade.

Why is my PNG file bigger than the JPG?

Because PNG is lossless. JPEG achieves tiny files by throwing away detail; PNG keeps everything, so the file grows. Expect a PNG to be two to five times the size of the JPG it came from. That is normal and unavoidable.

Can I add transparency to a JPG by converting it?

The conversion itself does not create transparency; it just changes the container to one that supports it. To get actual transparent areas, open the PNG in an editor afterward and erase or mask the background. Our background remover can do that step for you automatically.

When is JPG to PNG a bad idea?

When the only goal is sharing or uploading, and nobody needs to edit the image. In that case the bigger PNG wastes bandwidth and storage for no visible benefit, and you should keep the JPG or run it through our image compressor instead.

Does the PNG keep the same dimensions?

Yes. The conversion preserves the exact pixel dimensions and color of the original JPG. Only the format and compression method change.

Is this converter private?

Completely. The tool runs 100 percent in your browser via the HTML canvas, so your JPG never leaves your device. There is no upload, no account, and no record of your files.
