Convert Image Format Free, in Your Browser

When you need to convert image format between JPG, PNG and WebP, you should not have to install software or upload your photo to a stranger’s server. Pixel File lets you convert image format right in your browser: pick a file, choose JPG, PNG or WebP, and download the result in seconds. No signup, no watermark, and your files never leave your device.

Format choice matters more than most people think. JPG is the workhorse for photos, PNG is the pick for screenshots and anything with transparency, and WebP gives you smaller files with broad modern browser support. Converting to the right format is often the single fastest way to cut an image’s size.

How to Use the Image Converter

  1. Drop your image into the tool above or click to browse your device. JPG, PNG, WebP and other common formats are accepted.
  2. Choose the output format. You can also set the quality when converting to a lossy format like JPG or WebP, so you control the size.
  3. Click Convert and download the new file. Check the result opens where you need it before deleting the original.

How It Works

Conversion works by canvas re-encoding: the image is drawn onto a browser canvas and then re-encoded into the format you chose. Converting to JPG or WebP applies lossy compression, where a quality setting controls how much invisible detail is discarded. Converting to PNG uses lossless encoding, so every pixel survives exactly but the file is usually larger. Because the decode and encode both happen locally with your browser’s own image engine, the file is never transmitted anywhere.

One honest caveat: converting from a lossy format like JPG to PNG does not restore lost quality, it only repackages the same pixels without further loss. And converting to a format that already-compressed detail cannot recover is a one-way street, so keep your original when the image matters. Batch jobs are simple too, since each file converts independently and stays on your device from start to finish.

A Worked Example

A 4.2 MB phone photo in PNG format (perhaps saved from an editor) converted to JPG at quality 80 re-encodes to about 890 KB – the same pixels, nearly 80 percent smaller, and it will open everywhere. Converting that JPG to WebP at the same quality takes it down to roughly 600 KB, which is why WebP is the modern choice for web images. Going the other way, a 250 KB JPG logo converted to PNG becomes about 400 KB but preserves transparency for use on colored backgrounds.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which format should I convert to?

Use JPG for photos you want small and universal, PNG when you need transparency or pixel-perfect graphics, and WebP when you want the smallest file for the web and your audience uses modern browsers.

Does converting change the image dimensions?

No. Conversion changes the encoding only; width and height stay the same. If you also need different dimensions, use the resize image tool.

Will converting a JPG to PNG improve its quality?

No. Once detail is discarded by lossy compression it cannot be recovered. The PNG will just be a lossless copy of the already-compressed pixels, and usually a larger file.

Can I convert an iPhone HEIC photo here?

HEIC needs a dedicated decoder, so use our purpose-built HEIC to JPG page instead, then convert the JPG further if you need another format.

Is my image uploaded anywhere?

No. The converter runs 100% in your browser, so your files never leave your device. Nothing is uploaded, stored, or shared.

Why is my WebP file so much smaller than the PNG?

WebP uses lossy compression by default, discarding detail your eyes barely notice, while PNG is lossless and keeps every pixel. The savings are real, and on a modern browser the difference is invisible.
